Park Significance Worksheet
The 5-year (year 2005) GPRA Goal IIb1 states that
"86% of park visitors understand the significance of the
park they are visiting." In preparation for reporting GPRA
Goal IIbI, each NPS unit must develop and determine a list of
significance items. This list will be used to evaluate visitor
responses based on whether they are able to identify one or more
of the significance items included on the park's significance
list.
Items included on this list should describe a unit's unique contribution
to the National Park System. These significance items could involve
such things as statements of park purpose, park significance statements,
and primary park-wide interpretive themes (e.g., outstanding scenery,
geology, or natural feature, unique flora or fauna, cultural/historic
importance or recreational value). Examples of significance items
include "the largest concentration of petroglyphs in North
America", "cultural importance to Native Americans",
and "one of the largest pueblo ruins of its time period."
In determining your park's significance list, you may wish to
consult the following documents; Enabling Legislation, General
Management Plan, Statement for Management, National Parks: Index
1997-1999, Comprehensive Interpretive Plan, and/or other relevant
documents.
Please include up to a maximum of five items on this Park Significance
List. Your unit's superintendent should review the completed list.
